Does the verb 'recomendar' require the use of the subjunctive in the dependent clause? Category:
Spanish Subjunctive
Does the verb "recomendar" require the use of the subjuntive in the dependent clause? For ex., "Recomendamos que busque tratamiento dental para su hijo/hija." Or should I use "busca"?
Anytime you see the construction: verb of influence + que and the subject of the verb in the main clause is different than the subject in the subordiant clase the subjunctive should be used in the dependent clause (i.e. the verb following que). If the subject is the same, the infinitive is used: for example Quiero ir 'I want to go.' If the subject is different, the subjunctive is used: Quiero que vayas 'I want you to go.' A 'verb of influence' tries to influence the outcome of the dependent clause by prohibiting, asking, begging, wanting, persuading, allowing, needing, ordering, etc. Now, to answer your question, recomendar is a verb of influence. In recommending that someone do something, you are trying to influence the outcome of the dependent clause. The correct sentence is: 'Recomendamos que busque tratamiento dental para su hijo/hija.'
